What are core values? Why should we discover it?
Values “are the principles that give our lives meaning and allow us to persevere through adversity,” according to psychologist Barb Markway and Celia Ampel in The Self-Confidence Workbook. Core values can be anything that is important to you. You are the person you create, and that person is based on your values. Do you remember a while ago we shared an article about personality, after finding who you are, we will be sharing 4 steps to discover your core values, in order to build up your personal brand. Let’s get started!
Step 1. Create a list of adjectives that can describe yourself.
Journal about your values can be a highly enjoyable process regarding how you see yourself. Please think about what values you have and how you will describe yourself. At the beginning, you can write as much as you want on your list. If you start with a list, your conscious mind will tell you which values stand out.
Furthermore, if you’re lacking words to describe yourself, you are welcome to use the list down below and get a sense of your range of options.

Broad-minded

Step 2. Think of the most important 5 people to you in your life, and ask them how they think about you.
You often think that you know what kind of person you are, but in the eyes of other people, you may actually be a bit different from what you think about. So listen to your close friends or family member’s ideas, you sometimes will be surprised by the traits you didn’t think of before, and have a better understanding about yourself.
Step 3. Categorize your values
Now you have a master list of values. Next, review the list and see if you can group the values into categories. For example, you may have written transparent, honest, direct, truthful, straightforward, sincere. These values are all related and could be placed in one category. Another example is if you selected stable, reliable and punctual. These values could all be grouped together.
Step 4. Pick your top core values
Now comes to the hardest part. Rank the top values in order of importance. It is ideally to narrow your core values to 5-10 from your list. Think about what is essential to your life. When you pick your top 10 core values, please leave it for a day and come back to your list the next day. You will need to reflect on it, and see if you have the same thoughts on these core values.
Once you have determined your interests and expertise and your value, then you have to start thinking about what your final goal is and what your ideal personal brand should look like. For example, the goal of a pastry chef is to design the world's number one dessert, or to become an importer of quality ingredients because of the lack of good ingredients, or to develop healthy desserts that people pursue nowadays. The planned vision direction is different, and the time money you put in will be different from the core definition of the brand set up.
So think carefully about whether the final vision is in line with your values and your interests. You can find the core value of your personal brand that you are satisfied with and meet your needs in all aspects after you repeatedly explore.
